There are several ways of using baking soda to whiten your teeth, here’s how to make your own DIY teeth whitening using baking soda as its active ingredients:

DIY Teeth Whitening Baking Soda Recipes

1. Baking Soda + Water

Mixing baking soda and water is the most basic way available. All you need to do is to add half a teaspoon of baking soda to half a teaspoon of water. The mixture should look like a paste. Apply the paste to your toothbrush, and now you’re all set. There are several things you might want to consider. First, remember not to brush your teeth using the baking soda paste for more than two minutes. Second, always brush up and down ONLY, and avoid sideways brushing. Lastly, the taste of baking soda may not for everybody, because the taste is quite strong. After you’re finished, spit the leftovers and rinse your mouth and your toothbrush with water. You should notice a difference after a few days, and significant change should be visible after a couple of weeks.

Remember, baking soda is an abrasive ingredient. Frequent use will damage your enamel. Therefore, make sure not to brush with baking soda everyday. Just once every three days in the course of a couple of weeks should be sufficient. Once you’ve seen that your teeth is whiter, you should cut back the brushing to just once a week. You should also remember that the regular brushing with good toothpaste is still a necessity. Brushing with baking soda doesn’t help you to fight cavities, avoid gum disease, and keeping fresh breath.

2. Baking Soda + Toothpaste

For those who can’t stand the taste of baking soda, you can mask it by combining the baking soda with your toothpaste. There’s no real trick behind it. You can either mix the baking soda and toothpaste directly, or you can also make the baking soda paste (like we’ve mentioned above) and combine it with your toothpaste. Just like before, all you need to do is to apply the paste to your toothbrush and brush as usual. Do this every other day for a couple of weeks, and after significant result is imminent, do this once a week/

3. Baking Soda + Strawberries

You may be surprised with this DIY teeth whitening recipe. Strawberries can be used for teeth whitening due to its acids. Some may suggest to use it directly by rubbing it across each tooth and then rinse, but for more power you can mix it with baking soda. Just pick one strawberry and crush it into pulp, and then add half a teaspoon of baking soda. You don’t brush your teeth with this mixture. Instead, you are going to apply the mixture to your teeth and leave it there for five minutes. After five minutes, gently clean with toothbrush and then rinse. Do this twice a week, and you should be able to noticed significant result after two weeks. In my opinion, this DIY teeth whitening using baking soda and strawberries tastes better than using the baking soda paste.

4. Peroxide and Baking Soda

Last but not least, here’s the strongest combination on our DIY teeth whitening recipes list. As we have mentioned earlier, baking soda is an abrasive ingredient. Combined with hydrogen peroxide, the effectiveness is much higher than the other recipes. However, it comes with some risks.

For your information, the hydrogen peroxide is the active ingredient used in most over the counters whitening strips such as Oral B or Crest whitening strips. You need to be careful when using hydrogen peroxide and baking soda combo, because leaving hydrogen peroxide in your teeth for too long will cause white spots in your teeth. You also need to avoid gum area too, so be careful. You may feel teeth sensitivity after brushing with the mixture.

Here’s how to make DIY teeth whitening baking soda and hydrogen peroxide toothpaste: buy hydrogen peroxide. Mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide. The mixture should look like a toothpaste. Keep refrigerated when it’s not used. Apply a bit of the paste to your toothbrush, and then brush carefully and gently for no more than two minutes. After two minutes, rinse your mouth and the toothbrush using water. After that, brush with warm water for another two minutes and rinse again. You only have to do this twice a week, and results should be visible in just a few days.

Other baking soda alternative:

Baking soda is not the only home remedies and ingredient that can be used in teeth whitening. You can try brushing with apple cider vinegar twice a week, but because it is acids, limit the usage to twice a week. Alternatively, you can also use banana peels. The banana peels is the healthiest DIY teeth whitening recipe, because it doesn’t contain acids and it has vitamins and minerals good for your teeth and gums. You can use them as often as you’d like. However, the result is not as fast as abrasive ingredients like baking soda.

Which one do you prefer? I personally like the idea of DIY teeth whitening baking soda and strawberries
